»ÆƬÊÓƵ have been crowned State Cup cricket champions after the Girls Intermediate team executed a stunning bowling performance spearheaded by hat-trick hero Samantha Bremner.
The »ÆƬÊÓƵ team delivered a brilliant bowling blitzkrieg to have Mackay's Mercy College all out for 16 runs, at Marchant Park, Brisbane, this week.
»ÆƬÊÓƵ’s bowling attack was led by Player of the Final medium-fast bowler Bremner, who took 5/11 including a hat trick. She was supported by Trinity Doyle, 2/3, and Celia Schmidt,1/2, in a team effort applauded by »ÆƬÊÓƵ Principal Geoff McLay.
“Winning the State Cup is a deserving reward to the girls for their hard work in developing and honing their skills and team work. We are very proud of the girls and are thankful to Mr Andrew Doyle, their coach, a member of the knowledgeable »ÆƬÊÓƵ Sports Department, for his commitment and passion to the team,’’ Mr McLay said.
In reply »ÆƬÊÓƵ, the Southern Conference Champions, were 17 not out led by Laura Brown, 10 runs, and Celia, four runs.
“To win the State Cup was really exciting because a lot of our team haven’t played cricket before this season, and they have learnt all their skills here at »ÆƬÊÓƵ,’’ Schmidt said.
“To be given the opportunity to represent »ÆƬÊÓƵ and to win the Queensland final is a massive deal. We are all good friends, so we have a strong bond.’’
»ÆƬÊÓƵ secured the finals berth by defeating Fairholme College, Toowoomba, as well as St Rita’s College of Clayfield.
“The commitment and passion shown by our »ÆƬÊÓƵ girl’s cricket team is impressive. They have maintained their training schedule throughout the year, on top of other »ÆƬÊÓƵ sport training commitments, which demonstrates their dedication,’’ Mr McLay said.
“At »ÆƬÊÓƵ we focus on developing players’ basic skills and a strong team culture as well as providing specialist and dedicated coaches.’’
Four members of the »ÆƬÊÓƵ team are Met-West Under 15 team representatives including Doyle, Schmidt, Brown (wicket-keeper) and Bremner. »ÆƬÊÓƵ’s Samantha Dewar is a Met-West shadow player.
Doyle, 14, made her first grade debut for the Ipswich Hornets Woman’s Cricket Team last month with impressive results including a four-wicket haul and smashing 46 runs not out off 50 balls earlier this month.
The Year 9 student has also won selection in the inaugural Woman’s BPL comp for the Gold Coast Waveriders and produced strong performances throughout the tournament. Trinity made her first grade debut for Ipswich Hornets this season.
“From playing cricket at »ÆƬÊÓƵ, we realise how many opportunities are available now for female cricketers which is exciting. My dream is to represent Queensland like Queensland and Australian star Holly Ferling,’’ Doyle said.
Bremner is also a premier grade bowler for Ipswich who has had a strong start to the season with wickets against Sandgate Redcliffe and Souths recently.
